A suspected member of the New People's Army (NPA) was killed in an encounter between government forces and communist rebels in Gumaca, Quezon Tuesday afternoon, the military said Wednesday. Lt. Col. Edward Canlas, 59th Infantry Battalion commanding officer, said the troops were in Barangay Bungahan distributing leaflets to residents on how to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) when a resident approached and informed them about the presence of more or less 30 NPA members in the area.
The soldiers immediately responded to the area, resulting in a firefight. After the encounter, the military also recovered a grenade, an improvised explosive device, and a backpack containing subversive documents. Brigadier General Norwyn Romeo Tolentino, commander of the 201st Infantry Brigade, said the NPA members were allegedly extorting money and food from the residents in the area.
"The NPA terrorists’ act of asking for food and money from the community, particularly during this time of COVID-19 crisis, wherein people are deprived of their means of living, is not only insensitive but also despicable and hideous that no form of explanation will ever be acceptable," Tolentino said.Meanwhile, Major General Arnulfo Marcelo Burgos, commander of the Philippine Army's 2nd Infantry Division, expressed gratitude to the residents who continue to provide soldiers with information about communist rebels as it helps them in their military operation.
"The soldiers will remain steadfast in performing our mandate to serve our people and secure this part of our land while committing ourselves to the urgent task of containing the spread of COVID-19," Burgos said.
"We will adhere to the provisions of the unilateral ceasefire without prejudice to the safety and security of the people in our communities," he added.
